Spray chart
also: batted ball location · hit location
Where a hitter's balls in play go, as points on the field, with their trajectory.
Each ball put in play carries a location on ESPN's field diagram and a trajectory: ground ball, line drive, fly ball or pop-up. A spray chart of a season shows whether a hitter pulls, goes the other way, or hits everything on the ground.
Grouped by field and trajectory with hit rates, it answers the questions shifts and positioning are built on.
The common mistake
The location is where the ball was fielded or landed on a drawing, not a measured landing point with distance. It is good for direction and type, not for exit velocity.
