Base-out state
also: base-out situation · 24 base-out states
The number of outs and which bases are occupied: the situation a plate appearance starts in.
With 0, 1 or 2 outs and each of first, second and third either occupied or not, there are 24 possible states. Each plate appearance in the data records the state before it.
It is the building block of run expectancy and RE24, and the filter for situational questions like hitting with runners in scoring position.
The common mistake
ESPN records runners as they stand when the plate appearance starts. A stolen base during the at-bat changes the state mid-plate-appearance; the next row shows it.
