Pitch mix
also: arsenal · pitch usage
What a pitcher throws and how often: each pitch type's share, velocity and results.
ESPN's pitch-by-pitch data names each pitch's type (four-seam fastball, slider, changeup and so on) and its velocity, on 96% or more of each season's pitches and 99.8% or more from 2020. Grouped by pitcher and season it is the arsenal: usage, average and top velocity, whiff rate and ball rate per pitch.
Changes in the mix are often the first sign of a new approach or an injury: a fastball that has lost two miles an hour, or a pitch that has quietly disappeared.
Pitch types are classified by the data source and can be inconsistent between a cutter and a slider, or a sinker and a two-seamer. Compare a pitcher with himself before comparing pitchers.
