A sportsbook's last price before first pitch, the market's final word on the game.
Beating the closing line, getting a better price than the close, is the standard test of whether a bettor or a model has an edge, because the close holds nearly everything the market knew.
Before 2024 the source keeps one final pregame line per book, which we store as the close. From 2024 there are opening and closing lines.
The common mistake
Since 2024 most games have one book in the source, so the close is one book's, not a market consensus.
