On-base percentage plus slugging percentage: how often a hitter reaches and how much damage the hits do, in one number.
OBP = (H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF); SLG = total bases / AB; OPS = OBP + SLGOn-base percentage is the share of plate appearances that do not end in an out by the hitter's own hand. Slugging is total bases per at-bat. Adding them is crude, since a point of OBP is worth more than a point of SLG, but it tracks run scoring well and everyone reads it.
We count it from every plate appearance, which gives doubles, triples, hit by pitch and sacrifice flies that a basic box score leaves out.
OPS treats OBP and SLG as equals. For ranking hitters with similar profiles it is fine; for comparing a walk-heavy hitter with a power hitter, look at the parts.
